ERC Proof of Concept Grants 2022: three laureates from Université Paris-Saclay

The European Research Council (ERC) has announced the results of the third and final round of its Proof of Concept funding scheme for 2022. Three of the winning projects are coordinated by researchers and academic staff at Université Paris-Saclay.

ERC Proof of Concept grant winners are awarded up to €150,000, which can be used “to verify the practical viability of scientific concepts, explore business opportunities or prepare patent applications.”

The Proof of Concept grant scheme is only open to researchers who have previously been awarded other ERC grants. It is part of the EU’s 2021-2027 research and innovation programme, Horizon Europe.

 

Manuel Bibes was awarded an ERC Proof of Concept grant for his project Uplift (Ultralow-power logic-in-memory devices based on ferroelectric two-dimensional electron gases).

Manuel Bibes is a research director at the CNRS/Thales joint physics laboratory (Université Paris-Saclay, CNRS, Thales). Manuel is a recognised specialist in the application of metal oxides to spintronics. He explores fundamental properties at their interface in the hopes of finding new oxides to revolutionise microelectronic technology.

Michel Beaudouin-Lafon was awarded an ERC Proof of Concept grant for his project Onepub (Single-source collaborative publishing).

Michel Beaudouin-Lafon is a Professor at the Faculty of Science at Université Paris-Saclay, and deputy director of the Interdisciplinary Laboratory of Computer Sciences (LISN - Université Paris-Saclay, CNRS, CentraleSupélec, Inria). He specialises in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI).

Frédéric Dias was awarded an ERC Proof of Concept grant for his project Realtimesea (Real-time measurements of oceanic waves using connected buoys and mobile stations).

Surging ocean waves are behind some of the most destructive natural disasters in history, causing major material and human damage. Frédéric Dias and his team at the Centre Borelli (Université Paris-Saclay, ENS Paris-Saclay, CNRS) model ocean waves in real time to predict the risks.
